Classic Sugar Cookies

The holiday season wouldn't be the same without making a big batch of sweet sugar cookies. Baking this recipe is one of my favorite traditions that I look forward to each year. Taking the time to meticulously measure each ingredient, mix the dough, and cut festive holiday shapes with my family brings me so much joy.

I love this recipe because it is quick, easy, and makes flavorful sugar cookies with a snap.

Tips + Tricks

• This easy recipe does not need to be chilled!
• If you must chill the dough, leave it on the counter for 10 minutes before rolling out or work the dough with your hands for a few minutes to warm it up.
• This recipe can easily be doubled.
• Roll dough out onto floured surface before cutting. You can also coat the rolling pin with flour to keep the dough from sticking.
• Keep in mind, the recipe yield will vary according to how thick you roll the dough and the size of your cookie cutters.
• Bake cookies for 8 minutes to test. Cookies should be soft. Leave them on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to cool completely.
• If you reach 10-11 minutes and the edges turn brown, the cookies will be crisper.
• Cookies can be stored in an airtight container.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking powder
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for sprinkling on the counter

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until smooth.
3. Beat in the extract and the egg.
4. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the flour and baking soda.
5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, a little at a time. The dough will be stiff. If it becomes too stiff for your mixer, put the dough onto the countertop. Wet your hands and finish kneading the dough by hand.
6. Do not chill the dough. Divide the dough into workable batches and roll out onto a floured surface.
7. Cut using cookie cutters. You want the dough to be on the thicker side, about 1/4 inch.
8. Bake for 8-11 minutes.
9. Let cookies cool on the cookie sheet until firm enough to transfer to a cooling rack.
